NEW Year!

Hey Fifth Graders!
It has been a long time, hasn't it?!  I hope this new year is bringing you joy!  I am proud of the work you are doing.  Can you believe all that is going on with Mr. Terupt?!  Wow, it is so crazy.  Every time I read it, I nearly cry.

In this new year, I want to remind you of something.  YOU are a amazing!  Each one of you is smart.  Remember students, don't ask yourself, "Am I smart?"  Rather, ask yourself, "How am I smart?"

There is a fella by the name of Howard Gardener and he believes that all people are smart in different ways.  In fact, there are eight ways you might be smart:

Word Smart
Math Smart
Music Smart
Body Smart
Nature Smart
Self Smart
People Smart
Art Smart

You can learn more about what that means here:
Smartville Clip

We will be talking about this more in the future.  But,for now, be thinking of ways that you are smart!

Next week I will talk about the smarts starting with WORD SMART!

Who loves you?!  This gal :)

Now, go read a book!

Back at it...

Hey Fifth Graders,
Can you even believe that Thanksgiving Break is over?  Where did that time go?  It is Sunday morning and I will admit that the thought of getting up at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow has me a bit depressed. But, alas, I know that your smiling faces await!  You are smiling, aren't you?

Today, after you are finished with your Achieve 3000, ask me for an internet contract.  I am ready to start interacting with you.  Once you have signed the contract, you are free to comment on the blog. Also, if you would like you may start creating your own post ideas.  If it's a good one, I just might let you post it!

Who loves you?

Mrs. Simon Goes to School

Hey 5th Graders,

Guess what?  Mrs. Simon is going to school right now, too.  I am getting my Masters in Teaching so I can be a better teacher!  Like you, I have homework, quizzes, projects and deadlines.  Following are a few of the assignments I have done for my most recent technology class.  In fact, THIS post is actually an assignment that I have due for class.  Here are several other assignments I have had as well.

  • A Mind Map:

Remember Discussing Narrative Point of View?  Here is a Mind Map that helps you remember!

MIND MAP

Mind maps are a great way to help you brainstorm, organize and remember information.  Everybody want to know my P.O.V.

  • An Infographic:

Do these strategies look familiar?
Pros of using digital editing
Very progressive
Fun for students
They can be creative

Cons of using digital editing
It can be time consuming
It can be frustrating
It can be labor intensive

  • A Capzle:

Capzles are very fun.  I think you will really enjoy the following Capzle about characterization. Capzles visually show you something I want you to learn so you have have better recall.  Capzles are also interactive which allows you to be a part of your learning process.  What do you think?  Does this help you understand characterization?

Click HERE to visit the CAPZLE

  • A Screencast:
Screencasts are basically movies of the computer screen.  I have used these in class before to help you guys navigate (vocab word!) your way around a website.  I have also used this tool to give you instructions for classwork.  You may see more screencasts in your future.  Maybe on note-taking day?!?!?

Wordle UP!

Hey 5th Graders,

Just wanted to introduce you to a fun and creative way to express yourself. It is called a WORDLE!  I will have us use wordles for certain assignments in class.  For example, I may have you make a wordle for a character from a book.  Or, I may have you make a wordle poem.  But, for today, I would just like you to play around with making your own wordle.  Call it an introduction and tell me about yourself.  Click on the word WORDLE above and get creative!

My Dear Fifth Graders,

Here it is!

Here is the blog I was telling you about.  The first couple of posts will teach procedures and talk about internet safety etc.  From then on, the blog will be used for classroom instruction, communication and as a way of building community.  Ack, I am so excited!

For the next few entries, we will be reviewing internet safety and netiquette.  You will NOT be allowed to comment until all of your forms have been turned in.  For now, just relish the anticipation!

("Relish the anticipation."  What does that mean?  If you know, tell me.  If you don't, look it up or ask someone!)

Cheerfully,
Mrs. Simon
